Birds are among the most powerful symbols across cultures, representing freedom, migration, longing and connection. British artist Julie Nelson explores this rich duality through her avian studies, approaching the bird as both archetype and still life.
Birds have been a recurring motif in Julie's work since her move to the English South Coast in 2006, inspired in part by the dramatic starling murmurations along the British coastline. For WSJ Gallery, she presents a new series of ceramic avian sculptures in varied scales and finishes, exploring both the formal and symbolic potential of this enduring form.
Alongside the birds, Julie will present her Constellation Circles wall installation, a rhythmic exploration of this ancient symbol, balancing order and natural variation through richly textured surfaces inspired by collections found in nature.
'Murmuration' will also include new paintings by Peter Seal. The exhibition runs at WSJ Gallery from 19 February to 19 March.
